Seasonal Home and Garden Guide

Last updated: April 2026

This page is your central reference for seasonal gardening and home care at Everyday Home Garden. Use it to find the right advice for the current time of year — whether you are preparing your garden for winter, refreshing your home decor for spring, or maintaining your outdoor space through summer.

Everything is organised by season. Bookmark this page and return to it at the start of each new season.

Spring

Spring is the most active season in the garden. Soil warms up, plants come out of dormancy, and there is a narrow window to get seeds and transplants in the ground at the right time.

Gardening in spring:

  • Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost date
  • Prepare garden beds by turning compost into the top layer of soil
  • Divide overcrowded perennials before new growth gets too large
  • Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser to established beds
  • Prune roses and fruit trees as buds begin to swell
  • Set up a watering schedule before the dry months begin

Home decor and maintenance in spring:

  • Deep clean every room — windows, baseboards, behind furniture
  • Swap heavy winter textiles for lighter fabrics in linen or cotton
  • Repaint any rooms you have been putting off — spring light shows true colour
  • Check gutters and downspouts after winter for blockages or damage
  • Service your air conditioning before the first hot days of the year
  • Bring outdoor furniture out of storage and check for damage

Summer

Summer is about maintenance, harvest, and enjoying your outdoor space. Heat and drought stress plants quickly, so consistent watering and mulching become the priority.

Gardening in summer:

  • Water deeply and infrequently rather than lightly every day — this encourages deep root growth
  • Apply mulch 5 to 8 centimetres deep around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds
  • Deadhead flowering plants regularly to extend the blooming period
  • Harvest vegetables frequently — leaving ripe produce on the plant slows new production
  • Watch for pests — aphids, spider mites, and whitefly are most active in warm weather
  • Avoid fertilising during heat waves — plants under heat stress cannot absorb nutrients effectively

Home decor and maintenance in summer:

  • Create an outdoor living area — even a small balcony can become a usable space with the right furniture and plants
  • Add garden lighting to extend evening use of outdoor areas
  • Check window seals and door weatherstripping before humidity peaks
  • Clean ceiling fans and reverse their direction to push cool air down
  • Refresh soft furnishings with lighter colours and breathable materials

Autumn

Autumn is the season to prepare. What you do now directly affects how well your garden and home perform through winter and into the following spring.

Gardening in autumn:

  • Plant spring-flowering bulbs — tulips, daffodils, alliums, and hyacinths all go in the ground in autumn
  • Cut back perennials once they have finished flowering, but leave seed heads for birds and beneficial insects
  • Collect fallen leaves and add them to your compost pile or use them as mulch
  • Move tender container plants indoors before the first frost
  • Apply a top dressing of compost to garden beds to improve soil over winter
  • Plant garlic in late autumn for a summer harvest

Home decor and maintenance in autumn:

  • Swap lightweight summer textiles for heavier throws, cushions, and curtains
  • Bring warm tones into your decor — rust, mustard, deep green, and burnt orange all work well in autumn
  • Check your boiler and heating system before you need it — service it in September, not December
  • Clean and store outdoor furniture properly to extend its life
  • Seal any exterior cracks or gaps before cold and wet weather arrives
  • Check loft insulation and window draught-proofing

Winter

Winter is the quiet season — but there is still meaningful work to be done both in the garden and around the home. It is also the best time to plan, research, and prepare for the year ahead.

Gardening in winter:

  • Protect tender plants with horticultural fleece or move them to a sheltered spot
  • Keep watering indoor plants, but reduce frequency by 30 to 50 percent
  • Use snow as natural insulation — a light layer of snow actually protects soil from hard frost
  • Plan next year’s garden — review what worked, what failed, and what you want to try
  • Order seeds from catalogues in January and February before popular varieties sell out
  • Clean and oil garden tools before storing them for the season

Home decor and maintenance in winter:

  • Maximise warmth with layered textiles — rugs on hard floors, draught excluders on doors, thermal-lined curtains
  • Add indoor plants to bring life into the home during the grey months
  • Check pipes in unheated spaces and insulate them before a freeze
  • Clean your oven, refrigerator coils, and washing machine filters during quieter months
  • Use the slower season to plan any home improvements for spring
  • Refresh a room with paint — winter is a good time to redecorate indoors
